Defending champion Remsen staked its claim to the top of Center State Conference Division IV Thursday with a 6-1 win at home against a Poland Tornadoes squad that had not previously been beaten.
The Rams (10-1-0, 6-0-0 CSC-IV) got three goals and an assist from Erin O’Connor and defeated Poland (9-1-0, 4-1-0 CSC-IV) for the seventh time in three seasons. Remsen entered the week ranked first in NYSSCOGS’ Class D state poll — the lone loss for the Rams was against Class B Holland Patent — while Poland is No. 6.
Remsen scored first Thursday but Poland quickly tied the match with a Brianna Goggin goal. The Rams tallied twice more before halftime then added three goals in the second half.
Ashley O’Connor, Erin’s twin, had a goal and three assists, and Hailey Murray and Blake Brand each added a goal and an assist for Remsen, Section III’s two-time defending champion. Goalkeeper Megan Will made 12 saves.
Courtney Green had 11 saves for Poland.
The Tornadoes host their annual Columbus Day tournament Saturday and Sunday and meet DeRuyter at 4 p.m. in Saturday’s opening round; the other first-round match pits Frankfort-Schuyler against Holland Patent. The championship match is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.
Remsen next plays Tuesday at home against Dolgeville.
