  • Cianfriglia leads Gaelic Knights to the quarterfinals

  • After a strong effort in the first half against Bishop Ludden, the Ilion Golden Bombers were outscored 31-to-11 in the second half to lose 48-29 in their opening round sectional game.
    Ilion (12-7) led the game by one point at halftime (18-17) with some excellent defense which contained Gaelic Knight’s point guard Ashley Cianfriglia.
    That all changed in the second half when Cianfriglia led her team to a 17-point third quarter and 14-point fourth quarter.
    With Bishop Ludden playing really well on offense, their defense picked up the pace as well, allowing only 11 points in the second half.
    Leading the game in scoring was Cianfriglia. She finished with 18. Behind Cianfriglia was Bella Knapp (9), Kristen Ryan (8), Natalie Barletta (5), Kayla Kibling (4), Lauren Roy (2) and Kelly Granteed (1).
    As for the Bombers, they had five girls score in the game. Sarah Edwards had 12 points and 14 rebounds, Marissa Maldonado had five points, Amanda Alexander had five points, Abby Coffin had five points and nine rebounds and Christina Wright had two points.
     Bishop Ludden, with the win, advances to quarterfinals, which will be on Friday. The Gaelic Knights will travel to Westhill and take on the #2 seed Warriors. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Westhill High School. Ludden is the #7 seed.
