  • A Long Island teenager has died five days after suffering a cardiac arrest and collapsing during preparations for the NYSPHSAA cross country championship meet.
Newsday reports that 14-year-old freshman Ronan Guyer collapsed Nov. 9 while previewing the course at Elma Meadows Golf Course, about 15 miles from Buffalo. The teen’s uncle, Ed Plaia, said Guyer slipped on a patch of mud and hit the ground hard with his chest. The teen spent several days in a medically induced coma at a nearby hospital and died Wednesday night.
Southold Union Free School District superintendent David Gamberg said Guyer was “a genuinely kind, caring and compassionate person who was well-liked by students and staff.”
Lisa Plaia, the boy’s aunt, called him “a dynamite kid.”
Southold, the Section XI champion, finished 10th in Class D at the state meet.
