  • Sara Helmer is one of three William Smith College Herons named to the Longstreth/NHFCA Division III All-North Atlantic Region team for 2012.
Helmer, a senior back from Little Falls, was a second-team selection while senior forward Annie Kietzman and junior midfielder Melanie O’Connor received first-team honors.
A tenacious defender who was named to the all-Liberty League first team, Helmer received praise for her defensive efforts. The back led the Herons with three defensive saves, which ranked fourth in the conference. Helmer and her colleagues have been stingy, allowing opponents to score an average of 1.71 goals against, which ranked second in the conference.
In 69 career matches, Helmer is tied for second in the program’s history with seven defensive saves.
William Smith was 16-4-0 this season, winning the Liberty League regular season title with a 6-0-0 record. The Herons defeated Rochester 3-1 to capture the Liberty League Tournament title. Over the past three years, William Smith has a 43-17-0 record with two trips to the NCAA tournament.
Helmer and Kietzman will play a final game on their home field Saturday when they suit up for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Senior Game. Play begin at 4 p.m. and admission is free.
