  • Mary Jane (Lazzaro) Malta, 75, of Herkimer, was led by the hand of Jesus to Heaven, with her amazing strength and courage with pancreatic cancer on Thursday, Jan.17, 2013, at the Siegenthaler Center, New Hartford, with her loving family by her side.
    She was born June 1, 1937, in Utica, the daughter of the late Peter and Philomena (Vertucci) Lazzaro. Mary Jane was a graduate of Proctor High School and also Utica School of Commerce. Her marriage to Americo Malta took place on Aug. 16, 1958, at St. Anthony’s Church in Utica. The couple shared a blessed union of 39 years until the passing of Americo on March 22, 1997.
    Mary Jane was last employed at the former General Electric in Utica, and was involved with the Herkimer County Board of Elections. Mrs. Malta was a member of the former Tony R. George Post in Herkimer.
    Survivors include her loving children, Phyllis Vincent and husband, Brian, of Yorkville, Dolores Borden and husband, Curtis, of Deerfield, Gregory Malta, Sr., and wife, Patricia, of Herkimer, Mary Jane Vredenburg and husband, Bruce, of Herkimer, Anthony Malta and wife, Shauna, of New Hartford, and family and Frank Malta and wife, Anne, of New Jersey and family; her cherished grandchildren, John Alberts, Jude Alberts and Tiffany Rufolo, Jessica Jane and wife, Sarah Jacquays-Alberts, Gabriel Alberts, Zachary Vredenburg, Izabella Jane Vredenburg, Brian Michael Vincent, Andrew Vincent and wife, Krista, Kyle Vincent, Mathew Vincent, Gregory Malta, Jr., and fiancée, Janelle Bronson, Victoria Jane Burns and husband, James, and Myles Americo Malta; her treasured great-grandchildren, Kylie and Carson Vincent, Rayna Tye, Adyn Gregory, Avery James and Ryan Anthony Malta. She is also survived by a brother, Nick Lazzaro and wife, Eleanor, of Frankfort; sisters, Corrie Novak and husband, Robert, of Clinton, and Joyce Lazzaro, of Utica; in-laws, Carole Lazzaro, of Utica, Philomena Lazzaro, of California, Frank and Palma Malta, of Utica, Marion Talerico, of Herkimer, and Shirley Malta, of California. She leaves a huge family of very close nieces and nephews in which she showed much love and affection; special friends, Grace Tarkowski, Joan Totaro and Carol Simpson; and her canine companions, Bailey, Buster, Haley and Maya. Mary Jane was predeceased by her brothers, Lou and Peter Lazzaro; infant sister, Dolores Lazzaro; and in-laws, Joe and Rose Malta and Gregory Malta.
    Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at 9 a.m. from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi and Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer, NY and at 9:30 a.m. from the Church of Saints Anthony and Joseph’s where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Thomas Lawless, pastor. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, will take place in the spring. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, from 2 to 6 p.m.
