  • Now that students have voted on a name for the merged Ilion-Mohawk school district, they are turning their attention to choosing school colors and a mascot.
The School Identity Transition Team met Monday in the Jarvis Junior – Senior High School Media Center and narrowed the list of proposed colors and mascots they will bring to their fellow students for a vote.
The group reviewed ideas shared by Mohawk graduate Hal Hefner who now works as a graphic artist in Los Angeles. Hefner had previously met twice with the team via teleconferencing to present his professional opinions concerning color schemes and mascot designs. On Monday, Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra, Jr. suggested the team meet on its own.
“We have adults on the team and Mr. Hefner who have great ideas, but their role is to help guide the process. In the end, the students will make the decisions. It is the students’ opinions that really matter,” said Tangorra in a news release.
Rumors on social media sites suggested the team had already made the final decision, but this isn’t true, Tangorra said.
“Students on the committee obviously have their personal favorites,” he said. “Some of that trickled out into the community after the last meeting, giving people the impression the decisions were already made. That is untrue. The committee will bring forward a finalized list to their classmates and then all students grade 4-11 will vote on that list.”
Sitting at computers, the students reviewed Hefner’s suggestions and then searched the Internet for new ideas. They looked at colors and mascots from a variety of professional, college and high school teams and considered mascots such as gryphons (mythological creatures with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle), lightning and tigers.
By the end of the evening, the group settled on the following to explore further:
    Colors:
    • Black and gold (one current color from each school)
    • Black, silver and white
    • Blue, silver and white
    Mascots:
    • Eagles
    • Panthers
    • Patriots
    • Thunder
    • Wildcats
The team is forwarding the list to Hefner for his creative input.
The group plans to meet again within two weeks.
Ilion and Mohawk students in grades 4-11 voted on April 24 to name the newly merged school district Central Valley.
The School Identity Transition Advisory Team, made up of students, parents and school staff, had met to brainstorm possible names. The list was narrowed to three choices and the students picked Central Valley Academy over Mohawk Valley Academy and Ilion-Mohawk Central School.
The name was submitted to the New York State Department of Education for approval after the vote. SED representatives responded saying only school districts with a single building could use the word “academy” as part of their official district name. The state officials said they would approve the name Central Valley Central School District.
