The Herkimer County Humane Society is celebrating its 100 anniversary this spring and in honor of its success the organization wants to celebrate its first centennial with the community through a gala dinner.
Humane Society Board of Directors Secretary Jodi Flo said this year the board is doing different type of fundraisers to better connect with the community. “This year we want to have a big celebration with the community and we’re not looking at the upcoming events as fundraisers, rather taking the time to thank the generous Mohawk Valley community for helping the humane society stay in service for 100 years,” said Flo.
“It’s really great that we’ve been here for 100 years,” said Jodie Crews, humane society assistant manager. “We’re improving every year and although we still take in a lot animals, we’re going strong and we’re able to help provide them with shelter.”
The Herkimer Humane Society Gala Celebration Dinner will take place Friday, May 10, at Holland Heights Golf Course at 1228 Steuben Hill Rd., Herkimer.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail cash bar during the first hour and a buffet dinner and presentation to follow. Steve McMurray, of WKTV NewsChannel 2, will the host the celebration and a DJ will offer musical entertainment.
There will be a silent auction with prizes valued from $50 to $300 which include an overnight stay at a Vernon Downs Casino & Hotel jaquzzi suite valued at $200, a Studio 55 membership valued at $360 and more. Door prizes will also be given out ranging from $15 to $60 in value. Everyone who attends the gala will receive a wine glass with the humane society’s centennial logo.
Tickets are $50 a person or $90 for two people and can be purchased by visiting the shelter at 514 state Route 5S in Mohawk or by calling the shelter at 866-3255.
Those planning to attend are urged to purchase their tickets before May 10 due to limited ticket sales at the door.
The next celebration for the humane society will be the Mutt Strut scheduled for Sunday, June 2, at Herkimer County Community College from noon to 3 p.m.
Flo said this year the walk will be dedicated to police K-9 Ape, who was killed in the line of duty during a shootout between police and shooting suspect Kurt Myers in March.
Currently, the society is looking for sponsors for the Mutt Strut Walk T-shirt. Anyone interested can visit the website at www.herkhumane.org
Forms to register for the walk can also be found on the website.
A donation of any amount is appreciated to join the walk and those who give a $25 donation will automatically receive a free T-shirt.
As part of the Mutt Strut Flo said the humane society is looking for people who have previously adopted from the shelter for a special humane society photo.
