HERKIMER 42, LITTLE FALLS 8
Three of the higher seeds prevailed Friday in the first round of Section III’s Class C-2 playoffs, setting the stage for a rematch between Herkimer and Frankfort-Schuyler in next weekend’s semifinals.
Only a win by Lowville Academy in Class C-2 prevented the home teams from sweeping the quarterfinals of the section’s first split Class C playoffs.
Herkimer, the top seed in Class C-2, got quick revenge at Little Falls for its only loss of the season. The Magicians defeated the Mounties 42-8 six days after having their 14-game Section III winning streak broken in Little Falls.
Matt Borek, who sat out Saturday’s 20-12 loss in Little Falls, ran for 147 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns. Dan Appley scored all three times he touched the ball on offense and contributed eight tackles and a sack on defense.
Little Falls (2-5) missed a chance to score in the first quarter but took a lead early in the second. Trailing 7-0 after Borek’s 14-yard run for the game’s first touchdown, Mountie Jesse Lonis blocked a punt and Little Falls stared a drive at Herkimer’s 9-yard line. The Mounties advanced only one yard before turning the ball over on downs but immediately regained possession when Borek fumbled on the first play of Herkimer’s next drive.
A holding penalty backed the Mounties up before Mike Battisti threw a 27-yard pass to Will Robinson on the final play of the first quarter. Battisti ran a quarterback sneak for a touchdown on the second play of the second quarter and Tyler McLean ran in the conversion for an 8-7 lead.
The Mounties turned the ball over on their next two offensive plays and gained only 35 yards the rest of the game.
Herkimer (6-1) took the lead back in the middle of the second quarter with a 22-yard Austin Mills touchdown pass to Borek. The drive started after Dan Graziadei recovered a fumble at the Mounties’ 25 and was extended when Little Falls jumped offsides on fourth-and-two.
The Magicians opened the second half with an 11-play, 69-yard scoring drive capped by Mills’ 10-yard touchdown pass to Appley. Mills ran four yards for a touchdown on Herkimer’s next drive and the Magicians led 29-8 through three quarters.
Appley caught an 18-yard pass from Mills for one touchdown in the fourth quarter then ran 80 on the game’s final scoring play.
Frankfort-Schuyler was a 34-18 winner in its game. Joe DeSarro threw two touchdown passes to Justin Kiesow, Brandon Longo ran for two touchdowns and Mitchell Shortt scored on a blocked punt for the Maroon Knights (5-2).
Herkimer beat Frankfort-Schuyler 41-8 when the teams met Sept. 14. The rematch will be played at a neutral site which will be announced Sunday.
Page 2 of 2 - in the other Class C-2 quarterfinals, Tully (5-2) defeated the Syracuse Institute of Technology 27-8 and seventh seed Lowville Academy (5-2) was a 24-19 winner on the road against No. 2 Waterville/Madison.
In Class C-1, All four upper seeds won, including General Brown which scored a touchdown with nine seconds left to beat Utica’s Notre Dame Jugglers 33-30. Canastota, Skaneateles and Bishop Ludden of Syracuse all won by at least 20 points.
