  • Christmas in Ilion 2012 will kick off Sunday, Dec. 9, with the lighting of the village Christmas tree by two elementary school students.
And to be considered for the honor of lighting the tree, students at Remington and Barringer Road elementary schools were asked to give a little — to the Herkimer County Humane Society, that is.
Fred Hartmann, of the Christmas in Ilion committee, said youngsters at the two elementary schools were asked to bring in items to donate to the humane society and each time they did, their names were entered into a drawing to determine who will light the Christmas tree.
Hartmann and Joanne Johnson, of the humane society, were on hand Monday morning to collect the items the children donated.
Sunday’s tree lighting ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Ilion Municipal Building, 49 Morgan St. The event will also feature a visit from Santa, entertainment by the elementary choirs and bands from Remington and Barringer Road schools, refreshments and some Christmas surprises.
