The Little Falls Mounties stood up to a late Mt. Markham run Thursday and defeated the Mustangs 61-52 for their first win of the season.
Little Falls went 5 1/2 minutes without a field goal in the fourth quarter and saw Mt. Markham cut a 10-point lead down to one. Mike Alsante’s three-point play was followed by a Little Falls turnover and two Josh Holtham free throws made the score 51-50 with 2:53 left on the clock.
MItchell Baumeister converted a one-and-one at the foul line to give Little Falls (1-1) some breathing room and the Mounties shot 8-for-10 in the final two minutes to preserve the win
“I like how we finished,” Little Falls coach Brian Dodge said. “They cut it to one but we won the last two minutes basically.”
Tyler Baumeister scored nine of his game-high 18 points in the second quarter when Little Falls outscored its guests 24-13. Jesse Lonis added seven points in the period as part of a nine-point, 19-rebound night.
Mitchell Baumeister and Ben Delaney each scored 11 points for the Mounties. Baumeister also had four assists.
Kris Pontero and Nate Hudson scored nine points each to lead the Mustangs (0-2) and Tyler Ostrander had seven points and 10 rebounds. Travis Nelson  and Holtham each had eight points and four steals.
Little Falls also won the junior varsity game.
The Mounties open Division II play in the Center State Conference Monday at West Canada Valley.
“This was a big game to get a win before we go on the road,” Dodge said.
Next on the Mustangs’ schedule is Saturday’s afternoon home opener against Ilion.
