  • The Herkimer Police Department needs two police cars, police Chief Joseph Malone told the village board of trustees at a meeting Monday evening.
“We’re starting to run out of cars,” the chief said, adding those the department does have are often in the garage for repairs. “My budget is hurting already and we’re only halfway through the year.”
Malone said the department has not had a new car since 2009.
“The cars we should be using as backups we’re using every day,” he said.
The board asked Malone to obtain quotes for a pair of new police cars and report to the board.
The board may consider bonding for one vehicle and paying for another outright.
Malone said in a telephone interview Tuesday the new cars would replace a 2006 and a 2007 car. One has 122,000 miles on it and the other, 89,000, he said.
The department has six cars, including one unmarked vehicle.
“Two weeks ago, we went from five marked units down to one,” he said.
The chief said the police cars used to be on a replacement schedule, with the village purchasing a new car every other year, but budget cuts have kept that schedule from being met.
