  • The investigation is continuing into an animal abuse case at a barn in the town of Minden, according to New York State Police.
State police released a statement late Friday noting on Jan. 2 New York State Police, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Fort Plain Police Department responded to an address on State Route 5S in the town of Minden in Montgomery County to execute a search warrant after all three agencies had received numerous complaints over the previous several days regarding the living conditions of canines that were housed in a barn across the road from that address.
While executing the warrant, state police said, officials found conditions to be uninhabitable for the dogs located there. The structure was unheated and exposed to the elements, water was frozen, there was a deceased canine and many of the dogs were lying in fecal matter.
“This resulted in an immediate effort of the removal of more than 50 canines which ranged in age from puppy to adulthood and were mostly of the Pit Bull breed,” according to the statement. “This removal was a Herculean effort given the number of canines and the numerous shelters and agencies which had to be contacted and coordinated for assistance in housing these animals on a temporary basis along with a veterinarian check of each dog prior to being removed from the premises. Officials at the scene had set up heaters within the barn until the last animals were removed at approximately 9 p.m. on Jan. 3.”
The dogs removed from the barn suffered from various health-related issues, which included frostbite, open sores and worms.
There is no information yet available as to when or if these animals would be available for adoption.
Officials were still investigating this matter as of Friday and no arrests had yet been made.
