The Dolgeville Blue Devils rolled over a winless Mohawk squad on Saturday, improving to 7-0 with a 54-16 victory as they prepare to host the opening round of postseason play next weekend.
Dolgeville needed just two plays to get a touchdown on their first scoring drive, picking up 57 yards and ending with a 39-yard pass from quarterback Jake Darling to Travis Kopet. The Blue Devils would score four more times before Mohawk answered. Alex Snyder capped the Devils’ 23-yard drive with a two-yard run, putting Dolgeville ahead by 13. WIth 3:43 left to play in the first quarter, Michael Barnes made a one-yard run to make it 19-0.
In the second quarter, Snyder continued to lead the Blue Devils’ offense, when he helped Dolgeville put together a five-play, 70-yard scoring drive, capping it with a 14-yard run for his second touchdown of the afternoon.
On the Mohicans’ next possession, Snyder intercepted a pass from quarterback Carson Murphy and ran it back 74 yards for a touchdown.
“He’s an exceptional athlete,” Dolgeville coach Chris Connolly said of Snyder, who finished the afternoon with three touchdowns. “He just knows the game of football. He’s a ball hawk.”
Mohawk got on the board before the half, capping an 85-yard drive with a three-yard pass from Murphy to Joe Smith.
“People see an 0-6 team coming, but Dolgeville and Mohawk is a traditional (rivalry),” said Connolly. “Their quarterback poses some problems.”
In the second half, Dolgeville widened the gap with a quick three-play, 48-yard scoring drive, achieving a first down on each play before Ray Ruggerio made a 25-yard touchdown run. Ruggerio intercepted a pass from Murphy on third-and-six during the Mohicans’ next possession, giving the Blue Devils a first down on Mohawk’s 22-yard line. Ruggerio immediately ran the ball into the end zone for his second touchdown of the quarter.
The Mohicans took the ball back at their own 20 after a touchback on the kick return, then put together a 15-play, 80-yard drive to score their second and final touchdown of the game on a six-yard pass from Murphy to Smith.
The fourth quarter was largely quiet, marked by a solid drive from a reserve Dolgeville offense led by David Levey and Jason Nastovski, who led the team in carries with 10 and scored the quarter’s only touchdown on a four-yard run.
“They did a nice job,” said Connolly of his fourth-quarter roster. “David Levey’s an exceptional young man. He’s the next guy in at three positions and it’s nice to give him some time. Jason Nastovski did a good job.”
Nastovski picked up 44 yards on his carries, while Ruggerio led the team in rushing yards with 90 on five carries, bringing in two touchdowns in the process. Darling completed five of his seven pass attempts, one for a touchdown, for 114 yards.
Page 2 of 2 - Joe Smith led the Mohicans offense, making nine catches to pick up 67 yards and two touchdowns.
With a perfect regular season record, Dolgeville will begin to prepare for Section III playoffs this week.
“It really doesn’t have much to do with me,” said Connolly of his role in keeping the team motivated for the rest of the season. “These kids turn it on. They know. They know it’s playoff time and they’re ready to go.”
Dolgeville will be at home Saturday for a Class D quarterfinal against Weedsport
