She was born on June 10, 1921, in Ilion, daughter of the late Paris and Ella Williams Richardson. Florence was raised and educated in Ilion and VanHornesville. On April 4, 1940, she was united in marriage with Raymond Scanlon in Saint Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-six years until his passing on July 2, 1996. Mrs. Scanlon had resided in Gloversville since 2006, coming from Tupper Lake to be near to her daughter, Jean Dake.
For over fourteen years, Mrs. Scanlon had worked for the General Electric Company in Utica. She retired in 1972.
She was a strong, independent and caring person. In her leisure time, she loved crossword puzzles and watching TV news, golf and Jeopardy. In her younger years, she enjoyed camping at Tupper Lake and bowling with many leagues in Ilion and later in Tupper Lake and Gloversville. She bowled into her 80s. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were faithfully remembered on birthdays and for Christmas and graduations. She will be truly missed.
Surviving her are one son, Raymond Scanlon and his wife, Gail, of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters and their husbands, Jean Dake and husband, Michael, of Bleecker, and Carol Hickson and husband, David, of Corsicana, Texas; eleven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a dear cousin, Thelma Scanlon. Besides her parents and husband, Raymond, she was preceded in death by a son, William Scanlon; one brother, James Richardson; four sisters, Harriett Slotnick, Eleanor VanSickle, Esther Bergholt and Annabelle Scanlon.
Florence bequeathed her body to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.
A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Hospice of Fulton County, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, NY 12078.
