  • The field of candidates for the Herkimer Central School District superintendent position has been trimmed to three finalists.
The finalists are Shawn Bissetta, principal of the junior and senior high school in the Port Byron Central School District; Craig Ferretti, principal of McConnellsville Elementary School in the Camden Central School District; and Robert Miller, superintendent of schools for the Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School District.
“The Herkimer Board of Education is pleased to have such a fine slate of finalists,” said Mark Vivacqua, Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES district superintendent and the superintendent search consultant for Herkimer, in a news release. “The board looks forward to receiving feedback from the various constituent groups, including the community.”
All of the candidates will visit the Herkimer school district on Wednesday.
They will tour the district, have lunch with students and meet with the interim superintendent, administrators, supervisors, teaching staff representatives and support staff representatives.
District residents will be able to find out more about the candidates during a community forum at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, in the auditorium at Herkimer Junior - Senior High School.
During the forum, a committee of community members will help interview the candidates.
Each candidate will be interviewed for about an hour.
All members of the public are invited to observe the forum, and there also will be some time after the formal interviews for questions from the general public.
Community members who want to volunteer to serve on the interviewing committee may contact Herkimer District Clerk Sharon Judd at 866-2230.
Herkimer began searching for a permanent superintendent in November 2012. Gary Tutty, then the interim superintendent, had been hired after the retirement of Carol Zygo to shepherd the district during the merger study process. District residents voted against merging with the Mohawk and Ilion school districts, and Tutty announced he would leave the district at the end of 2012. Former Dolgeville Superintendent Ted Kawryga has been serving as the interim superintendent since the start of 2013.
After the board of education approved Vivacqua as the superintendent search consultant in November 2012, the next step in the search process was an online survey. The survey allowed community members to weigh in on the qualifications and experiences they are looking for in a superintendent candidate.
After the district visits and the community forum, the board will conduct final interviews during a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The new superintendent could be in place as early as May 1.
