  • Kathleen A. Carney, principal of Herkimer Elementary School in the Herkimer Central School District, has been selected as the 2013 New York State Elementary School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State.
This award is given annually to a member of SAANYS and the  National Association of Elementary School Principals who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administrators who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process.
Carney has served as an educator with Herkimer for 20 years and has been an elementary-level administrator in her current position for ll years. Herkimer Elementary is a Pre-K-6 suburban school with an enrollment of nearly 700 students. Carney previously served as an elementary teacher in Herkimer and played a significant role in Herkimer Elementary being named a “High Performing/Gap Closing” school under the No Child Left Behind Act in 2003-04, 2005-06, and 2006-07. She is a strong advocate for universal preK, early interventions, and the sustainability of these programs despite fiscal belt-tightening.
As evidenced in a letter of support regarding Carney’s nomination, she is admired and respected in her school, her district, and in the community. The letter stated, in part, “As a principal, she understands and practices the meaning of ‘paying it forward.’ She has mentored  teachers as they did their administrative internships and many of them are now successful principals, having had the beneñt of Kathy’s tutelage and experience. . . . In  2007, Kathy was recognized as a Herkimer County Cares Asset Builder for all of her good Works, both in and out of the school.”
Asked about how she supports learners who are struggling, challenges learners who are excelling, and maintains high standards for all, Carney stated, “It is important that as a principal, I support the broadening of a child’s development, not just in academics, but beyond. It is important to understand the whole child and acknowledge students for the small accomplishments so they gain the confidence and risk-taking abilities to expand their horizons.”
Carney is an active member of several professional and community associations and organizations including PTA, the American Youth Soccer Organization, Ride for Missing and Exploited Children, Miles for Missy, and the Relay for Life Team Herkimer. Carney will be honored for her accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 10 at the Century House in Latham, New York.
As New York’s Elementary School Principal of the Year, Carney will be celebrated as a National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals at a recognition program sponsored by NAESP and VALIC this fall in Washington, DC.
