  • Susan M. Witchie Ferdula, 63, of Ilion, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer, with her family by her side.

  • Susan M. Witchie Ferdula, 63, of Ilion, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer, with her family by her side.
    She was born in Norwich, Conn., on Feb. 20, 1949, the daughter of the late Edward and Edna Breslin Witchie. She attended Norwich Free Academy, graduating in 1967. Susan was involved in the Salem Fire Department and was the first female firefighter of Connecticut. She was an EMT and graduated with honors as an LPN in the state of New York. She moved to New York and worked in the health care industry at Folts Homes, the Masonic Home Care Community and also worked at Saint Peter’s and Paul in the rectory.
    Susan was a Girl Scout leader and was in public relations for the Salem Historical Society. She wrote editorial opinions for the New London Day.
    Susan is survived by her loving children, Scott Ferdula, of Middleville, Bridget Ferdula, of Herkimer, and David Ferdula, of Ilion; her brother, William Witchie, of Salem, Conn.; her cousin, Noreen Goepel, of Elkton, Md.; her uncle, Phillip Franklin, of Bohara, Conn.; and her cherished grandchildren, Samantha Ferdula, Breslin Clark, Mariana Ferdula and Mason Ferdula.
    Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Salem Green Cemetery in Salem, Conn. The family has entrusted all funeral arrangements to the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer, NY, 866-1500. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Herkimer Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407, in lieu of flowers.
