  • Fire heavily damaged a house on Farber Lane early Thursday morning, according to East Herkimer Fire Chief Ben Keller.
The three residents, two adult brothers and their mother, made it out of the large farm-style house safety, but the family dog was lost.
Keller said the call came in at about 12:06 a.m. and East Herkimer, Mohawk and Frankfort volunteer firefighters responded. Newport and Middleville were called in with tankers, but were not needed.
Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours.
“They did a great job getting in there,” said Keller. “There was a heavy volume of fire on the first floor.”
There was heat and smoke damage throughout the house and severe damage to the first floor.
The cause of the fire was unattended cooking, Keller said. The family is staying with friends.
He said one firefighter was injured when he fell into a creek near the house in the darkness. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
