Two wins at home Saturday and two more in Utica Sunday gave the Herkimer County Community College Generals a sweep of their Larry Doby Series against neighboring rival Mohawk Valley Community College.
The Generals (19-10, 18-2 Region III) won 5-4 and 6-2 in Herkimer Saturday then completed the sweep with 9-4 and 7-1 victories at Murnane Field.
The wins came in the first four games after Herkimer had an 11-game winning streak snapped Tuesday at Schenectady County Community College. The Generals were rained out against Schenectady but have won 15 of their last 16 games and 18 out of 20 on their northern schedule.
Ryan Watson pitched a complete game Sunday and earned the win in the series finale. The Whitesboro High School graduate struck out five batters and walked three while allowing one run on six hits in a start against Mohawk Valley’s Bryan McGuire, a Herkimer native. Brandon Overstreet hit a two-run home run in the first inning and the Generals built a 7-0 lead before Mohawk Valley scored its run in the fifth.
Overstreet had three hits in Sunday’s first game and drove in two runs, including the first with a double in the third inning. Chris Burns followed Overstreet’s double with one of his own to bring home two more runs for a 3-0 lead. Mohawk Valley came back with three runs in the bottom of the third and Herkimer took the lead for good with a run in the fourth driven home by Watson. The Generals added five runs in the top of the sixth.
Mohawk Valley had scored first in both games Saturday. The Hawks led the first game 1-0 and 4-3 before Watson drove in the tying run in the fifth then scored the go-ahead run on a hit by Overstreet. Rob Hardy pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless three-hit relief to earn the win for the Generals and Overstreet drove home three runs with a double and a triple.
Chas Parsons had scored the first run in the first game and drove in the first of the second as Mohawk Valley took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat. A.J. Fabrizio started the bottom of the first with a double and scored on Burns’ sacrifice fly then Watson scored on a passed ball to give the Generals a 2-1 lead. Single runs in the second and fifth innings gave the Generals a 4-1 lead and two more in the sixth made it 6-2. Fabrizio had three hits and Kyle Garrison earned his fourth win by allowing two runs on four hits through six innings.
Overstreet and McGwire were chosen as the most valuable players for the first installment of the Larry Doby Series, named for the first black player in the American League and playing off the annual Jackie Robinson Game — also at Murnane Field — between Utica and Hamilton colleges. Overstreet was 6-for-14 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, four runs scored and seven runs batted in over the weekend. McGwire, a freshman, led off for Mohawk Valley in all four games, playing third base in the three games he did not pitch, and went 5-for-14 with four runs scored.

The Generals begin a series against Jefferson Community College with a doubleheader at home Tuesday. The Hawks are home Tuesday for a pair of game against SUNY-Adirondack.
