A walk-off 1-0 win in Tuesday’s second game gave the Herkimer County Community College a split at home in the first round of its series with Jefferson Community College.
Jefferson was a 6-3 winner in the first game played between Region III’s first- and second-ranked Eastern Division squads. The teams will complete their series Thursday at Watertown’s Duffy Fairgrounds.
Joe Kuzia pitched a four-hit shutout in Game 2 and wiggled out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning to give his team another chance to win the game and earn a split. Jefferson had runners at second and third with nobody out in their last at-bat and stranded both on a fly ball to left field, a line drive to shortstop and a slow ground ball to second base. Second baseman Cody Newbigging charged and threw to first for the final out and the teams went to the bottom of the seventh in a scoreless tie.
Chris Burns doubled over Nathan Mastervick’s head leading off the home half of the seventh and was replaced at second base by pinch-runner Carlos Almonte. Newbigging swung and missed at the first pitch he saw from Mitchell Dubois then laced the second past diving shortstop Kyle Simmons for a hit. Almonte rounded third base and raced home as Simmons retrieved the ball in shallow left field then beat Simmons’ throw to the plate to score the winning run.
Kuzia struck out nine batters and walked three while leveling his record at 3-3 for the Generals (20-11, 19-3 Region III). Newbigging had two of Herkimer’s four hits against Dubois.
Second-ranked Jefferson (23-14, 17-5 Region III) had won the first game behind Jacob Welch who limited the Generals to eight hits and single runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Almonte scored on a passed ball in the first inning but  Welch held the Cannoneers in check after that. Nicolas Espino had a two-run single with two outs in the fourth inning to give Jefferson the lead and the Cannoneers added three runs an inning later when Herkimer starter Nick Burch walked the bases loaded.
Brandon Overstreet had two hits and a run batted in for Herkimer in Game 1. Espino had two hits and drove in three runs  while teammate Erric Barnier had two hits and scored twice for Jefferson.
