  • Ellen L. Looman, 91, formerly of Willoughby Hall, Newport, died on May 1, 2013, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, where she had resided for the past one and one half years.

  • Ellen L. Looman, 91, formerly of Willoughby Hall, Newport, died on May 1, 2013, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, where she had resided for the past one and one half years.
    Ellen was born on April 23, 1922, in the town of Fairfield, a daughter of late William and Minnie (Durrin) Satterlee. She received her education in local schools and was united in marriage with Wesley Looman in 1941 in Dolgeville. In her early years, she worked at the former Borden Plant in Newport and Allegro Shoe and Gilbert Knitting Mill, both formerly of Little Falls. Mr. Looman died in 1960. For over twenty years, she shared companionship with Michael Bienick, who preceded her in death in 1986. Ellen retired from Reynolds Drapery Service, Newport, in 1989 following twenty years of employment as a seamstress.
    She was a life-member of Adirondack Unit No. 1118 American Legion Auxiliary, Cold Brook, and Post No. 4915 VFW Auxiliary, Herkimer. Mrs. Looman was of the Methodist faith.
    Survivors include four daughters, Shirley (Harold) Coe, of Clinton, Beverly Helmer, of Newport, Kathy (Ralph) Mueller, of Herkimer, and Teresa (Jerry) Robinson, of Fairfield; her twin sister, Helen Scanlon, of Dolgeville; one brother, Clifford Satterley, of the town of Ohio; twelve grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Wesley, and companion, Michael, she was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Klotz; a sister, Hazel Eaker; three brothers, William, Lloyd and Leland Satterlee; and a son-in-law, Bradford Helmer.
    In accordance with Ellen’s wishes, her remains will be donated to SUNY Upstate Medical University for medical research. Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.
