  • Civil War re-enactors don’t simply know what to do as soon as they don a period uniform.
They need training and some will receive it Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, during the annual Schooling of the Civil War Soldiers at the German Flatts Town Park on state Route 5S, two miles east of Mohawk.
“Infantry soldiers will learn different drills, commands and rifle drills from the period of the 1800s,” according to Tim Rathbun, a local Civil War re-enactor. He added there will be safety drills for various maneuvers and participants can become certified in cannon operation.
The event will get under way at 8 a.m. each day and the public is welcome to come and watch.
In addition to the schooling of the soldiers, there will be a garage sale and craft fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a pulled pork dinner starting at 2 p.m., both on Saturday.
Vendors are welcome to set up displays of crafts or garage sale items at the town park at no cost, but are asked to consider a donation to the Friends of the German Flatts Town Park, according to Frank Spatto, town supervisor and Friends member.
To sign up for the garage sale/craft fair or for more information, those interested may call the German Flatts Town Office at 866-1370.
The menu for the dinner will include pulled pork, salt potatoes, baked beans and coleslaw. Those who purchase tickets in advance must pick up their meals by 4 p.m. on May 18, according to Nelson Johnson, of the Friends of German Flatts Town Park.
The Schooling of the Soldiers is the first of several events planned this year at the German Flatts Town Park. Cow Plop Bingo, a chicken barbecue and strawberry feast are scheduled for July 6, Polish Night with Tony’s Polka Band is set for Aug. 23 and Living History Weekend will be Sept. 27-29.
