  • The officers and advisory board of the Salvation Army of Herkimer County will honor Ron and Pam Hess with this year’s Others Award.
The couple will be celebrated for all of the good work they do for the community during the Salvation Army’s annual Civic Dinner on Monday, May 20, at 6 p.m. at Francesca’s Banquets & Catering in Ilion. Tickets are $25 each and are available by contacting advisory board members or the Salvation Army directly at 866-1240.
“Please join us in honoring this great couple for all of the fantastic work they do in the community and their dedication to others,” a post on the Salvation Army of Herkimer County’s Facebook page reads.
The Salvation Army presents the Others Award as a way to acknowledge the service of others. The award is given to an individual, organization or group of people that have shown significant efforts in helping the community and have shown integrity in they way they use their gifts and skills in Herkimer County. Past recipients include Harry Enea, Jr., Sylvia Rowan, Harrison Hummel III, John Brennan and Ed View.
The history behind the award began when founder William Booth wanted to send a telegram message to Salvation Army posts from around the world, but only had enough money to send one word, so he choose to send a one word message that said “Others.”
“We are both humbled and honored to have been chosen to receive the Others Award,” Ron and Pam Hess said during a Thursday press conference at the Herkimer Citadel.
In addition to honoring the Hesses for their work, the May 20 dinner will celebrate the services the Salvation Army of Herkimer County provides to the community.
Tina Cirelli will be the guest speaker, according to the Salvation Army’s Facebook page.
The evening’s activities will begin with a 5:30 p.m. greeting time.
