    Finger Lakes Community College knocked the Herkimer County Community College men from  the ranks of the NJCAA unbeaten Tuesday and completed a sweep of the Lakers’ doubleheader at home Tuesday evening.



    The Finger Lakes men won 60-56 after the women’s team avenged an earlier defeat with its 61-50 victory.

    Finger Lakes Community College knocked the Herkimer County Community College men from  the ranks of the NJCAA unbeaten Tuesday and completed a sweep of the Lakers’ doubleheader at home Tuesday evening.
    The Finger Lakes men won 60-56 after the women’s team avenged an earlier defeat with its 61-50 victory.
    Freshman Richard de la Cruz hit all four of his three-point shots in the first half and helped Finger Lakes take a 34-32 lead at halftime. De la Cruz had 14 points at halftime and finished with 18 to lead the Lakers (2-3). Sean Carbonell added eight rebounds and five assists for the winners.
    Herkimer (4-1) kept the close by shooting 56 percent from the field in the first half. The Generals went cold in the second half and shot 8-for-33. They also struggled at the foul line, shooting 9-for-21.
    Mike Thomas led the Generals with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Dequan Jefferson added 11 points and Jonathan Feiler scored 10.
    In the first half of the twinbill, Finger Lakes’ women paid Herkimer back for a 53-50 loss in their season-opener with Casi Strait and Kelli McCauley combining to score 40 points in the victory.
    Strait, scoring 18 of the Lakers’ 27 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 22 to go with five assists. McCauley added 18 points and nine rebounds on a night when Finger Lakes (3-4) did not attempt a foul shot. Britany Monpere grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the victors and the Lakers had a 44-31 advantage on the boards.
    Leading by one point at halftime, Finger Lakes shot 56 percent in the second half and stretched its lead into double digits.
    Allie Webb scored 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting from three-point range for the Generals (3-2) while Whitney Brown returned from an injury to match her 12 points and grab seven rebounds.
    Both Herkimer teams are in action Thursday at home against Broome Community College. The women’s game tips off at 5 p.m.
