  • Mrs. Ada Marie Richards, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
The daughter of the late Floyd Hoke and Arley Mae Hopkinson, Ada was born in South Columbia, town of Warren, in Herkimer County, on Dec. 17, 1919. Her family later moved to the Freysbush section of the town of Minden, Montgomery County, from whence she attended Fort Plain High School, graduating in 1938. She remained a resident of the town of Minden until 2006 when she moved to Herkimer. On July 25, 1953, Ada married William Herman Richards in the Methodist Church in Fort Plain; a marriage that lasted 46 years until William passed away in 2000.
Other than a short period of employment at Bailey Knitting Mills in Fort Plain, Ada was a housewife most of her married life and devoted all of her time and energy to her beloved husband, son and grandchildren. She was a member of the Fort Plain United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Sunday school, United Methodist Women, Couples Club and the Pairs and Spares Club, and helped with many of the church’s luncheons and dinners.
Ada is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Nancy Homyk Richards, of Rome; two grandchildren, William and James; and a nephew and three nieces. She was predeceased by two sisters and five brothers; Harry, Reba, Ruby, Richard, Robert, Donald and Gerald.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in the St. Johnsville Cemetery; Rev. Alan Griffiths of the Fort Plain United Methodist Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ada’s memory may be made to the Fort Plain United Methodist Church or to the Benign Essential Blepharospasm Research Foundation, P.O. Box 12468, Beaumont, TX 77724. Ada’s family is very grateful to her neighbor, Richard Welch, and to her cousin-in-law, Grace Bellinger; to the staff at Folts Homes and Valley Health Services in Herkimer, and the staff at Little Falls Hospital; and to Helen Homyk and the many friends who visited and called on her during her final years.
The family is being cared for by the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville (518-568-2300), John P. Lewandowski, funeral director. To offer an online message of sympathy, please go to www.eneafamily.com.
