  • With D.J. Helmer and Jake Ross both scoring over 20 points for Port Byron on Tuesday in an opening round matchup against Herkimer, the Panthers defeated the Magicians in overtime 82-79.
Port Byron, the home team, got a very tough showing from the Magicians. By the time halftime came, the Panthers only had a 38-33 lead.
That lead vanished when the Herkimer 2-3 zone defense frustrated Port Byron, outscoring the Panthers by 13 points (20-to-7), giving Herkimer a eight point lead into the fourth quarter.
After a couple changes to their game plan, Port Byron again beat the Magicians in scoring in a quarter. This time it was the fourth quarter.
What helped the Magicians was a little luck, but also their big third quarter. With the game in it’s final second in regulation, Port Byron had the ball out-of-bounds and had to inbound it for the clock to expire. A full-court pass would be caught by a Panther, and some confusion with the clock caused the player to set the ball on the ground, thus giving Herkimer’s Paul Grubner the chance to pick the ball up and then get a 18-foot jumper off with 3.8 second left in the game and tie the score at 70, pushing the game into overtime.
The Magicians luck ran out though in overtime when the Panthers outscored Herkimer 12-to-9, advancing them to the quarterfinals against Westmoreland.
Again, providing most of the scoring for Port Byron was Helmer and Ross, which combined for 44 points.
For the Magicians, they had four players score in double figures. Paul Grubner had a game-high 26, Mike Fahy had 19, Myles Malta had 12 and Donnie Coleman had 11.
After Herkimer’s top four, Sean Crandall scored seven and Ryan Schiavi and Teddy Borek both scored two points.
