Opening night at Mohawk’s new Tolpa Athletic Complex did not go well for the Mohicans.
Star tailback Alec Silvera ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cooperstown Redskins to a 33-8 non-league win on the road in the first athletic event on the new field and under the new lights on what formerly was Lower Tolpa. Silvera and quarterback Coley Graham, a last-minute transfer from Hamilton’s suspended program, each contributed two touchdown runs as Cooperstown built a 26-0 lead through three quarters.
“We have to learn lessons from it,” Mohawk coach Roy Upson said. “We’ll go over what woked well and what needs work.”
Cooperstown drove 87 yards on its initial possession and took a lead on Silvera’s eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Graham ran 47 yards for a touchdown after Mohawk faked a punt on the Redskins’ side of the midfield stripe in the second quarter. A pair of missed extra points left Cooperstown with a 12-0 lead at halftime.
The visitors took put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Cooperstown took possession at Mohawk’s 11-yard line after a shanked punt went out of bounds and Graham immediately ran for his second score of the night. The Redskins got the ball back at their own 20 four minutes later and Silvera broke loose on a 75-yard run to paydirt two plays later.
The Mohicans shook off Silvera’s quick strike and engineered a scoring drive of their own led by Carson Murphy, a sophomore making his first varsity start at quarterback. Murphy hooked up with Joe Smith on passes for 15 and 18 yards and added a 17-yard scramble with a facemask penalty tacked on as Mohawk worked its way up the field from its own 12. The second pass to Smith gave Mohawk a first down with goal to go and the third quarter ended after a short game by Murphy. When play resumed, Murphy was stopped for no gain once then dashed five yards to the left corner of the end zone to put the Mohicans’ first points on their new scoreboard. For good measure, Murphy also ran in the conversion.
Cooperstown would tack on another touchdown run by Silvera after Mohawk failed to regain possession on an onsides kick
Mohawk had threatened to score once in the first half but Cooperstown made a stand and eventually forced a turnover. A 46-yard run by Murphy helped Mohawk drive to the Cooperstown 6 late in the second quarter. Redskin Jeff Flynn tackled Murphy for a loss on a sweep on second down and Ethan Telfer sacked Murphy for the second time on third down. On fourth-and-goal from the 30, Murphy’s heave was intercepted.
After a shaky first half kicking the ball, Silvera hit all three of his extra points in the second. Graham added 78 yards on the ground and completed one pass.
Page 2 of 2 - Murphy completed 12 of his 26 pass attempts for 80 yards and ran for a similar amount of yardage. Jordyn Krowicki had a team-best 10 tackles on defense.
Mohawk plays another non-leaguer at home Friday against Port Byron, a replacement on the schedule for Bishop Grimes of Syracuse which, like Hamilton, had to drop its program for the season because of a player shortage. Cooperstown plays its home opener Saturday against West Canada Valley.
