  • Herkimer County Community College is partnering with the American Red Cross to collect monetary donations to aid Hurricane Sandy victims during the NJCAA men’s soccer tournament this weekend.
Red Cross volunteers will be available to accept donations throughout the tournament at Wehrum Stadium. Four matches — two semifinals and two consolations — will be played Friday starting at 11 a.m. and the championship match kicks off Sunday at noon.
“Three of the teams competing in the tournament this weekend have been directly affected by Hurricane Sandy, as well as many of our own students and their families, so we wanted to do something to help all those in need,” director of athletics Donald Dutcher said.
The teams participating in the tournament directly affected by Hurricane Sandy are Ocean County College, located in Toms River, N.J., Brookdale Community College from Lincroft, N.J., and New York’s Suffolk County Community College, based in Selden.
