  • Joyce Eileen Phalen, age 69, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, January 11, 2013, in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.
She was born May 19, 1943, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Alvin and Catherine A. Lynch Miles. A lifelong Mohawk resident she graduated from Mohawk High School with the class of 1961.
On July 22, 1983 she was united marriage with Thomas Paul Phalen in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk.
For twenty one years she worked in Base Housing at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome. She retired from Griffiss in 1995. With her vast experience in housing at the Air Force Base she immediately went to work for the Herkimer Housing Authority. Mrs. Phalen remained there for ten years and retired totally in 2005.
Eileen had a strong faith in God and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk. In her leisure time she enjoyed dancing with her husband before her illness made it too difficult for her. For the past fifteen years they cherished the time they spent together at their camp at Piseco Lake and Eileen playing cards with her many friends.
To all who knew her, she will always be remembered as kind, soft spoken and caring person who found much pleasure in doing for others and wanting nothing in return. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her loving husband of nineteen years, Tom, one brother, Lawrence Miles and his wife, Gail, of Catawissa, PA, their son, Greg Miles, of Lancaster, PA, daughter, Alyssa Miles and her two children, Jeremy and Adrianna Palmer, of Syracuse; two brother-in-laws, John Phalen and his wife, Jean, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Michael Phalen, of East Herkimer; two sister-in-laws, Lois and her husband, John Nevils, of Swampscott, MA, Kathryn Knewasser and Jay Wilson, of Ilion; along with several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, David Phalen and his wife, Frances and two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Delores Phalen.
Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk with the Very Reverend Mark Cunningham assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life director, officiating.
