  • The community will have a voice in the selection of the next Mount Markham Central School District superintendent.
During the Mount Markham Board of Education’s regular meeting on Jan. 8, board members finalized their plan for the public engagement portion of the superintendent search process.
Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua, who is Mount Markham’s search consultant, also updated the board about the application and screening phase of the search.
“We have a strong pool of candidates from which to choose,” Vivacqua said in a news release. “I am confident the Mount Markham board members, with the help of their staff and community, will identify a quality leader from this field to be their next superintendent.”
The next steps of the superintendent search are as follows:
    • The board of education will interview a pool of six semi-finalists on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and Wednesday, Jan. 30.
    • Three finalists will be selected and invited for full-day interviews the following week with several constituent groups.
    • On the evening of Thursday, Feb. 7, the three finalists will be interviewed separately by a committee of community members during a public forum at the high school.
Community members wishing to volunteer to serve on the committee should contact District Clerk Mary Holmes at 822-2824.
The number of committee members will be limited, but all members of the public are invited to observe the forum. There also will be some time after the formal interviews for questions from the general public.
Mount Markham began its superintendent search in late October 2012, after Superintendent Casey Barduhn announced he was leaving the district at the end of 2012 to become superintendent of the Westhill Central School District.
The Mount Markham Board of Education appointed retired Ilion Superintendent Robert Service to fill in on an interim basis until the new superintendent is selected. He took over superintendent duties on Jan. 1.
The new permanent superintendent could be in place as early as May 1, and no later than July 1.
At the start of the superintendent search process, a questionnaire was posted online to allow the community to weigh in on what qualifications the district is looking for in a superintendent.
“The board of education members were pleased with the community response to the search questionnaire,” Vivacqua said. “They look forward to continued community participation in the process.”
