FRANKFORT — Sean Crandall ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third in the first half Friday as the Herkimer Magicians went on the road and defeated Frankfort-Schuyler 24-16 to open the 2010 season.
“This is fantastic,” Herkimer coach Alan Steele said. “For a young, inexperienced group of kids to pull off what we did tonight was great.”
Frankfort-Schuyler turned the ball over seven times with five coming in the first half and contributing to a 21-0 halftime deficit. Crandall ran 37 yards for a touchdown and passed to Adrian Viscomi for another score in the first quarter. Crandall ran the ball in from one yard out for his second touchdown in the second quarter.
“We took advantage,” Steele said. “We made things happen and we did a nice job taking advantage of those things.”
The Maroon Knights came out strong in the second half and cut their deficit to five points. Gerald Post and Mike Tomaino ran for touchdowns in the third quarter and Frankfort-Schuyler tacked on two two-point conversions.
Teddy Borek, a converted soccer player participating in his first varsity game, gave Herkimer some breathing room with a 33-yard field goal. Borek, who also played defensive end and tight end, hit all three of his conversion attempts.
The Maroon Knights forced Herkimer to punt with just under two minutes left to play but Crandall’s kick pinned them inside their own 15. Frankfort-Schuyler converted one field down before Wesley Bunce sealed the win with his second interception of the game near midfield with 54 second left to play.
Bunce also recovered a fumble to account for three of the seven Herkimer takeaways. Terry Oldfield contributed another interception and a team-high eight tackles on defense.
Crandall, a junior making the move to quarterback, had 115 of Herkimer’s 171 rushing yards on 17 carries. He also attempted 12 passes and completed seven to five different receivers for a total of 92 yards.
Tomaino led Frankfort-Schuyler with 83 yards on nine carries. Joe Cooper completed five passes for 111 yards with Post accounting for 85 on his two catches.
Herkimer has another league game on the road Friday in Ilion. Frankfort-Schuyler travels to Boonville Saturday to take on Adirondack’s Wildcats.
