  • The Herkimer County Legislature Wednesday evening unanimously approved a bid for a billing service for the Public Health Nursing Service.

Acting Director Christina McCain said the service will allow the county to collect payments for immunizations from private insurance, and would not only pay for itself but bring in revenue.
Currently, patients must either pay in full or they’re referred to Oneida County, she said.
“That’s not the way we want to service our community,” she said.
MedCare Administrators LLC from New York Mills was awarded the bid at a cost of $2,700 for startup and $50 a month for maintenance fees.
The contract also stipulates compensation of 9.9 percent of collection plus $1.97 for each charge entered, with a minimum of $999 charged per month.
Prior to the vote, Legislator Helen Rose, D-Herkimer, pointed out this will allow the county to monitor trends in how many individuals with private insurance and those without seek services.
“I look forward to the information (on this trend),” she said.
McCain said the state mandated in October 2012 that counties begin collecting payment from those who have private insurance. Services previously were covered for those with or without private insurance.
