  • Stephen Juras, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, October 7, 2012, in the North Country.
He was born on April 12, 1927, in Little Falls, son of the late John and Catherine Malek Juras. Stephen was raised and educated in Little Falls. In September of 1944, he answered the call of his country, enlisting in the US Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged on March 18, 1946, attaining the rank of Seaman first class.
On June 24, 1950, he was united in marriage with the former Barbara DeMars in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty years until her passing in 1990. Mr. Juras worked as a construction worker for Local Union #35 in Utica, specializing in concrete. He retired in 1984.
Stephen was a life member of the Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4915, Herkimer. He had a special place in his heart for his dogs and they returned that affection to him. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and picking mushrooms and found peace and serenity in the outdoors. It was while out in the forest on Sunday afternoon that God called him home. Stephen will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Nessia and her husband, James, of Schuyler, and Stephanie Juras, of Herkimer, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife, Barbara, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Juras, in 1979; a brother, John Yurash; three sisters, Anne Sieving, Catherine Healey and Susan Violet; and his dear friend, Patricia Marusic.
Funeral service for Mr. Juras will be on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Daniel Lanza will officiate. Interment with military honors accorded by the US Navy will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Salvation Army, PO Box 168, Herkimer, NY 13350. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
