  • Mary Josephine (Mary Jo) Folts , 87, passed away peacefully in her home on Sept. 26, 2012. She was born in 1924 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, the daughter of Gilbert and Josephine Morken.
While in Idaho, she attended local schools along with her older brothers, Paul and David. In 1941 her family moved to Jackson, Calif., and Mary Jo graduated from Holy Rosary Academy in Woodland, Calif. in 1942. She graduated from Dominican College in San Rafael, Calif., in 1946 and then taught school for one year in Jackson, Calif. During her last year of college, she met Richard (Dick) W. Folts, a Second Lt. in the Army Air Corp that was stationed in the Bay Area. They were married on May 11 1947 ,in Jackson, Calif. After moving to Herkimer in 1947, Mary Jo taught school briefly. They purchased their home on Margaret Street in 1950, where they raised her four children. When Dick was elected county sheriff in 1963, the family moved to the sheriff’s residence within the 1834 Historic Herkimer County Jail. In addition to raising her children, Mary Jo was also employed as a bookkeeper for the town of Herkimer and a matron for the county jail. The new jail was completed in 1977 and they returned to their home on Margaret Street. Dick retired in 1981 and they spent many happy summers at their cottage on Canadarago Lake while hosting countless family gatherings, maintained beautiful gardens and were able to relax and enjoy themselves. Mary Jo’s daughter Kristin was married to Mitchell Keno on the camp property in 1975. Dick passed away on March 2, 1989.
Mary Jo continued to stay very active donating her time at St. Francis de Sales School, playing bridge with her friends, sailing, dancing and listening to music with her good friend Jim Marrone and continuing to host family gatherings. She loved to play cribbage, especially with her four grandchildren. She baked pies for her daughter Barbie and son-in-law Rocky’s restaurant, The Waterfront Grille, where you can purchase “Mom’s” raspberry pie on the menu. She liked to take walks with her friends and Tuesday girl’s night out with her two daughters became a regular activity.
Mary Jo was a kind, concerned and trusted friend to all that got to know her, a devoted mother to her children and their families and her grand dogs. She always maintained her strong faith to the end of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Kristin and Mitchell Keno, of Herkimer; their daughter, Dr. Lisa Keno and husband, Dr. John Overton, of Easton, Conn.; her son, Thomas and JoEllen Folts, of Broadalbin; their children, Michele Folts, of Boston, Mass.; Katie Folts, of Madison, Wis., and Matthew Folts, of Stratton, Vt.; daughter, Barbie and Rocky Fiato, of Herkimer; and son, David Folts and wife, Laura Kringen, of Portland, Oregon.
