A Goldendoodle primped up for Valentine’s Day won the title of 2012 Pet of the Year.
But who will win the 2013 title?
The 16th annual Telegram Pet Calendar contest is currently under way. Photos of readers’ pets — be it dog, cat, bird, horse, etc. — at their cutest, most playful or most adorable can be submitted for one of the 12 spots on the 2013 calendar and with a chance to earn the title of 2013 Pet of the Year.
“The turnout was tremendous for the 2012 calendar and we’re looking forward to area residents sending in their photos. We’re expecting a large turnout again,” said Telegram and Times Publisher Beth Brewer on Monday.
Maggie Mae, owned by Ray and Kay Lenarcic of East Herkimer, won last year’s title. The winning photo of Maggie Mae was taken sometime in February, around Valentine’s Day, soon after leaving The Velvet Dog, where she was also wearing bows.
Kay Lenarcic said in December after Maggie Mae won the contest, “She’s a sweet, sweet girl and she has lots of friends and family.”
She also said they bring Maggie Mae to Valley Health Services every week, where she likes to visit with the residents.
Members of The Telegram staff will pick the 25 finalists. Voting will run until Nov. 30. Each vote costs a dime. Ballots can be found in the print edition of the paper along with photos of the 25 finalists.
“This all goes toward the Newspapers in Education program, where we place newspapers into area schools weekly during the school year,” said Brewer. “It provides a living textbook and learning tool for students.”
Photos need to be submitted by Oct. 31 to The Telegram by mail at P.O. Box 551, Herkimer, NY 13350 or dropped off at the office at 111 Green St., Herkimer. The photo must be a sharply contrasted photo that will reproduce well.
A self-addressed stamped envelope needs to be included if entrants want their photo returned. Include the pet’s name, the owner’s name, address and telephone number on the back of the photo along with a short description of the pet’s breed, etc.
