  • The Herkimer diamond could become the official state mineral.
A state Senate bill passed Tuesday will now go to the state Assembly for approval of the quartz crystals from the Mohawk Valley becoming the state mineral.
The legislation previously was approved by the state Senate in 2011 and 2012.
“The Empire state has a proud tradition of recognizing and trumpeting the features that make it unique,” state Senator James Seward, R-Oneonta, said in a news release. “Certainly, the Herkimer diamond is one of those rare treasures well deserving of ‘official’ statewide status.”
New York State has previously designated an official gemstone — garnet, fossil — sea scorpion, shell — bay scallop and bush — lilac, among others. There currently is no official state mineral.
