  • Carolyn Jean Sommer, age 64, of Clark Place, passed away on Friday evening, Feb, 1, 2013, in Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio. She had the comfort and support of her loving family at her side.
She was born on October 15, 1948, in San Bernardino, Calif., daughter of Lois Lillie Horning and the late Edward Horning. A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Ilion and was a graduate of Ilion High School. On July 21, 1984, she was united in marriage with Robert F. Sommer in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Norman Heide officiated.
For fifteen years, Mrs. Sommer was first employed by the Duofold Company in Mohawk. She later became a certified nurse’s aide, working at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home. She then went on to work for the Herkimer Area Resource Center, first as a house manager and later as a supervisor at Herkimer Industries. She also did part-time work with Lutheran Care Helping Hands and as home health aide.
Carolyn was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 502 Ladies Auxiliary, Ilion-Frankfort; she was a member and served as secretary of T.O.P.S. In her leisure time, she enjoyed scrap booking, shopping, baking and traveling, especially camping at Black Lake. She was an avid sports fan and cheered for the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and her beloved Florida State Seminoles.
To all who knew her, she will forever be remembered as a gal always on the go. Carolyn was a loving, caring and hopeful person who found great satisfaction in helping others while looking for nothing in return. She will be sorely missed by her many friends and family, especially her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her devoted husband of twenty-eight years, Robert; a daughter, Cathy Benedict, of Mohawk; two sons, David Parker and Dwayne Parker and his fiancee, Cora, all of Ilion; her mother, Lois Horning; one brother, Robert Horning, of Frankfort; a sister, Linda Puelleo, of Mohawk; four grandchildren, Catrina Noffer and her husband, Jason, and Amy Zabry, all of Ilion, and Shauna Parker and Kayla Parker, both of Mohawk; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. in the funeral home with the Reverend Ann Zimmerman, pastor of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
