Suiting up as “Mohawk” for the last time in the Jarvis High School Gymnasium, the Mohicans wrote a happy ending Wednesday night. The top seed in Section III’s Class C-2 playoffs rolled through the quarterfinals with a 76-39 victory over the Weedsport Warriors.
Mohawk (18-1) ran its section-best winning streak to 17 games and set up a third meeting with West Canada Valley with the victory. The Mohicans and Indians will meet Saturday night at Onondaga Community College’s Allyn Hall with a spot in the sectional title game and a trip to the Carrier Dome up for grabs.
Voters in Ilion and Mohawk approved a merger of the districts earlier this month. The two schools will become one with the start of the 2013-14 academic year and Ilion’s final independent basketball season ended with a playoff loss Saturday in Skaneateles.
Playing in front of a packed crowd for their Jarvis finale, the Mohicans opened Wednesday’s game with an 11-3 run and led by as many as 23 points before halftime. Carson Murphy, the school’s all-time scoring leader, put up a game-high 27 points with 17 rebounds and five assists.
Kainan McCarthy added 25 points and eight rebounds, Mike Santillo had 11 and nine, and reserve McKensy Reardon had seven of the team’s 20 assists.
    J.J. O’Connor led Weedsport (10-10) with 16 points.
Mohawk defeated West Canada Valley (14-5) twice on the way to a perfect 10-0 finish in Division II of the Center State Conference, winning 63-58 at home Dec. 18 and 76-66 in Newport Jan. 30. The Mohicans also defeated West Canada Valley twice last year. Murphy and McCarthy have combined for 43 and 39 points in the two games this season; Jordan Yaworski led West Canada Valley in scoring in both games with 18 and 20 points.
The Class C-2 semifinals — Fabius-Pompey (15-4) and Waterville (18-1) meet on the other side of the bracket — are scheduled for 6 and 8 p.m. following the Class C-1 semifinals Saturday. The split class championship games will be played Tuesday at neutral sites with the overall Class C title game set for March 3 in the Carrier Dome.
