  • Mohawk Street in the village of Herkimer will be closed Wednesday so that local crews can practice erecting a flood wall.
The 8-foot-high, aluminum wall was designed as part of the Herkimer Flood Control Project and will be used to block the entire breadth of Mohawk Street when flooding is imminent, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The DEC and the village will practice deploying the wall, starting at about 7 a.m. Wednesday, which will block traffic in both directions. Detours will be in place, the release stated.
In addition to making village staff familiar with how to construct the wall in an emergency, the drill also will ensure that the wall's plates are in good working order and can be quickly assembled. Once in the place, the wall is meant to keep flood waters from the Mohawk River from entering the village under the Thruway bridge, the release stated.
