  • Agnes Thomes, age 89, formerly of West Center Street, Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, in Waccamaw Community Hospital, Murrells Inlet, S.C.
    She was born on July 18, 1923, in Mohawk, daughter of the late Harold and Mary Mansfield Myers. Agnes was raised in Mohawk and was a graduate of Mohawk High School. On March 2, 1946, she was united in marriage to Henry J. Thomes in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, a loving union of 52 years until his passing on March 28, 1998.
    For 35 years, Mrs. Thomes was a telephone operator and later a supervisor for New York Telephone in Herkimer and Ilion. She retired in 1975. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, the Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Telephone Pioneers of America, Crowley Barnum Post No. 25 American Legion Auxiliary and various bowling leagues in Ilion and Herkimer.
    She was happiest when she was with her family, especially her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
    Surviving her are a daughter, Kathleen Shaffer and her husband, Mark, of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Shaffer, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Erin Beadle and her husband, Jason, of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; three great-granddaughters, Olivia Rose, Sydney Melissa and Emily Kathleen Beadle, all of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; a sister, Anne Myers-Smith, of Chesterfield, Va.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Myers, of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Besides her parents and husband, Henry, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Myers, Harold Myers and John Myers, and a sister, Maryrose Myers-Cole.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, with the Very Reverend Mark Cunningham, sacramental minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, parish life director. Interment will follow in Mohawk Cemetery.
    Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Blessed Sacrament Church, East Main Street, Mohawk, NY 13407 or the Agape Hospice of the Grand Strand, 128A Professional Park Drive, Conway, SC 29526; envelopes will be available at the church.
    Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
