  • A man has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty after Herkimer police said he injured his girlfriend’s puppy after the dog made a mess in the apartment.
Police said a young woman brought her injured, six-month-old puppy to the police department for help. Police said the village’s dog control officer responded and took the dog to the Herkimer Veterinary Association where it was treated for a contusion above its eye, a broken leg and several broken ribs. Police said they learned the owner’s boyfriend, Matthew G. Shephard, 24, had punished the dog for making a mess in the North Main Street apartment.
Shephard was charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals and was arraigned in Herkimer Village Court. He was remanded to the Herkimer County jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $15,000 bail bond.
Police said the dog is still being treated by the veterinarian, but is said to be in good condition.
