The Albany Dutchmen loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning Wednesday but scored only once and the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs held to defeat the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s top team 6-4 at Bob Bellizzi Field.
Zach Williams struck out Dutchman Anthony Marks for the first out of the ninth but Bradley Noland followed with a single that produced one run and moved the tying runs into scoring position. After another strikeout, Williams was relieved by Tyler Bray who retired Zach Remillard on a ground ball for his second save.
The loss was the third in four games for the Dutchmen who remain atop the Eastern Division standings. Mohawk Valley has won back-to-back games for the first time since winning the second, third and fourth games of the season. The DiamondDawgs are now 9-2 away from Veterans Memorial Park.
The DiamondDawgs did not have a batter reach base until Sam Dexter singled against Kyle Pheland with two outs in the third inning. An inning later, Mohawk Valley had the game’s first run when Jordan Serena doubled leading off and scored on a throwing error on Dalton Herrington’s ground ball.
The visitors struck again in the sixth inning, scoring three times to take a 4-0 lead. Albany committed two of its four errors during the inning. Willie Shaw drove home a run with a single and Brett Zaziski had a sacrifice fly.
Albany answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth but Mohawk Valley tacked on single runs in the seventh and ninth to go up 6-3 heading to the final at-bat for the Dutchmen. Serena singled in the seventh and scored on a bunt by Shaw that went for a hit. Herrington scored on the front end of a double steal in the ninth.
Herrington stole two bases and now leads the PGCBL with 19. Serena, Herrington, Shaw and Dexter all had two hits for the DiamondDawgs. Herkimer County Community College right-hander Michael DeCarlo started and pitched six innings to claim his first win of the summer.
Noland and Jonathan Torres each had two hits for Albany.
Mohawk Valley is on the road again Thursday for a game at Newark. Newark’s Pilots had the league’s highest-scoring performance in Wednesday’s 22-7 at Adirondack.
