  • June is National Dairy Month and what better way to celebrate than by drinking some cold milk with lunch.
That’s what children in the YMCA summer program at Fisher Elementary School did Thursday, with an occasional spill, thanks to the people at Hoober Feeds.
Bob Wright, of Herkimer, who works for the Pennsylvania-based firm, was looking for a way to celebrate National Dairy Month by distributing milk.
“Being an old United Way chairman, I called the United Way office and asked who would be a contributing partner that would benefit,” said Wright. “I was thinking of kids. They suggested the YMCA summer program.”
At about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Wright and Larry Knepper, of Hoober Feeds, Pennsylvania, arrived at Fisher Elementary School with 350 cartons of milk to donate. Cartons of milk were handed out to the children who made short work of them, although some needed help opening them. Knepper advised the children to shake their cartons to mix in the chocolate syrup.
Wright said the company has done other distributions, such has giving
milk to the children of Hoober’s customers, and has included other flavors, such as strawberry.
This is the first year of conducting a free distribution here, he said, but he hopes to continue it annually in celebration of Dairy Month and expand the program.
Robin Robinson, of United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area, said she was excited when Wright called with his proposal and looks forward to continuing it in the future.
The YMCA summer program is celebrating Dairy Month with the children for a two-week period that began June 14.
