  • A 12-mile stretch of highway has been closed after 30 freight train cars derailed in Montgomery County, one of them skidding across the road.
Montgomery County Sheriff Michael Amato tells media outlets two trains going in opposite directions on parallel tracks apparently side-swiped each other. It happened just before 8 a.m. Thursday near Fonda, 35 miles west of Albany.
Amato says a conductor and engineer had minor injuries.
The sheriff’s office has blocked off a 12-mile stretch of Route 5. One car lay on its side across the highway surrounded by spilled cargo.
Officials say investigators have determined no hazardous materials were spilled.
An Amtrak spokesman says some passengers are being bused between Albany and Buffalo and advises customers to consult its website for changes.
